Does your building need to undergo an asbestos survey?

September 4, 2017

Asbestos management is an often overlooked and necessary part of ensuring any building is safe. The silently dangerous substance may be found in UK buildings which were built before the year 2000. Indeed, although the substance can mainly be found in structures built around the 1960's, regulations pertaining to asbestos use were only put in place relatively recently (the full ban was instated in 1999) so it would be misguided to think that asbestos issues are a thing of the past.

Assessing whether your building is in need of a survey, therefore, is very important, and can basically be worked out from the building's history. If you are in any doubt, having a survey undertaken may be the only way to achieve complete peace of mind.

For non-domestic properties, if you are responsible for managing the health and safety of a building, you will need to take asbestos surveys very seriously. If you own or manage any non-domestic property in the UK which was built before the year 2000, you are required by law to have an assessment of any materials containing asbestos which may be present. To ascertain whether this is the case, an asbestos survey is the only option. Indeed, inadequate practices related to asbestos regulations can lead to prosecution, so it is imperative to get surveys undertaken as soon as possible.

An asbestos survey is beneficial in that it will provide precise information as to the location of any asbestos materials. It will also ascertain the level of deterioration of the materials and whether immediate action is required to assuage any health issues that these materials may cause. Once the survey has been fully completed and a report has been issued, you can organise a plan of action which will be able to eliminate the asbestos risk from a building and ensure any staff or residents who use it regularly will no longer be at risk.

PA Group, as a UKAS accredited company, can assist you by providing an asbestos survey, carried out professionally and efficiently.
